Driving in Forte dei Marmi

Luxury car rental in Forte dei Marmi comes to you with Zeus Prestige: at your villa, at your hotel, or at Pisa Airport (PSA). Rent or hire a convertible, a luxury SUV, a sports car or a supercar and discover the Versilia coast and the Tuscan hills yourself. Luxury car hire in Forte dei Marmi puts marble mountains fifteen minutes behind you and the Gulf of Poets forty minutes up the coast.

The town takes its name from the small fort on its main square, built in the 1780s by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo to guard the marble that came down from the Apuan Alps for shipping. The pier where the blocks were loaded still runs some 300 metres out to sea and is now the evening promenade. Michelangelo is credited with the first quarry road to this shore. The marble trade faded, the villas arrived, and since 1914 Forte dei Marmi has been its own municipality: low, green and shaded by maritime pines.

Life here moves by bicycle. Mornings are for the beach clubs, with their rows of striped tents, and Wednesdays for the market, whose stalls are known across Italy for cashmere and linen. La Capannina has kept the nights going since 1929. Eight kilometres inland the mountains rise white where the quarries have cut them, and the roads up there are as quiet as the seafront is busy.

Luxury Car Rental in Forte dei Marmi: Three Drives From the Pier

Lerici and the Gulf of Poets

Take the roof down and head up the coast. Forty minutes north, past the mouth of the river Magra, the road climbs to Montemarcello and drops through olive terraces to Lerici, on the bay that Byron and Shelley made famous as the Gulf of Poets. A castle guards the harbour, pastel houses line the water, and the lane beyond runs on to the fishing village of Tellaro, where it stops. The air is salt and pine, and the lanes squeeze between stone walls tightly enough to make you hold your breath. Lunch is by the harbour. The car is good company on the way home, with the sun low over the sea on your right and the Apuan peaks turning pink ahead.

The Marble Mountains

A sports car is the right tool for the marble mountains. From Seravezza, ten minutes inland, the road climbs beneath Monte Altissimo, where Michelangelo came looking for stone, past Levigliani and the Corchia caves, and through the narrow Cipollaio tunnel into the Garfagnana. The corners are tight and the valley falls away steeply, so your pulse quickens long before the top. On the far side the road follows a mountain stream past the lakeside hamlet of Isola Santa to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, about an hour from the coast. Stop for coffee under the fortress walls, then return the same way. The descent toward the sea asks a great deal of brakes and steering, and a well-sorted car answers.

Lucca and Pisa

The cities are a day for comfort, in a luxury SUV or a grand touring car. Lucca is half an hour inland, ringed by Renaissance walls four kilometres round and broad enough to carry a tree-lined promenade along the top. Inside are streets on Roman lines, a piazza built on the oval of an amphitheatre, and the house where Puccini was born. Pisa is twenty minutes further, its tower, cathedral and baptistery standing together on one lawn. The motorway between them is brief and easy. The cabin stays cool, the seats are soft, the afternoon is unhurried, and the car has you back at the sea in time for the evening walk on the pier.
