Cornwall, in the far southwest of England, doesn't ask you to choose between comfort and capability on its coast road, and neither does the F-Pace. Head west out of Truro toward the cliffs, the turbocharged four settling into a composed, unhurried cruise as hedgerows give way to open sea views. The chassis still hunts corners the way a proper Jaguar should: weight kept low, steering sharp rather than dulled by the extra ride height, even with the boot loaded and the whole family aboard.
Salt air drifts through the vents as the road climbs above St Ives, the harbor town's whitewashed cottages and narrow lanes giving way to gorse and heather clinging to the clifftops, the Atlantic stretching out grey-blue to the horizon. Start in San Sebastián itself, in Spain's Basque Country, La Concha beach curving along the bay, the old town's pintxos bars still setting up for the evening as you roll through toward the coast road. Roof down, leave the city behind and trace the coastal corniche toward Biarritz, just across the border in France, the supercharged V8 exhaling into a deep-chested growl that bounces off the cliffs to your right. This is Basque country at its most dramatic: the road hugging the shoreline, waves breaking against rock far below, the scent of salt and pine drifting into the cabin as the route twists along the headland.
Biarritz arrives with its own particular energy: surfers in the water below the Grande Plage, the belle-époque casino catching the afternoon light, before the road continues to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, its harbor full of fishing boats and the smell of the day's catch drifting up from the quayside. From here, turn inland through the green Basque foothills to close the circuit back toward San Sebastián. The V8's voice changes with the terrain: a low, contented purr on the coastal straights, sharpening into a bark on the tighter inland bends.
Two seats, no more needed, because this drive was never about carrying passengers so much as making a promise to the one beside you. By the time La Concha comes back into view, the light's usually turned gold, and the car's earned its place parked somewhere with a view of the water.
Start in Andermatt, Switzerland, roughly two hours south of Zurich, and climb out onto the Furka Pass, a relentless sequence of hairpins that ranks among the most demanding stretches of tarmac in the Alps. The F-Type coils low and feline into each switchback, the cabin closing around you like a glove tailored by someone who's done this before, aluminum toggle switches clicking under your fingertips as you work up through the gears.
Thin mountain air carries the cold, mineral scent of rock and snowmelt through the cabin as the road climbs past 2,400 metres, the V8 barking off every upshift like punctuation. Near the summit, the Rhône Glacier comes into view below, blue-white ice against grey scree, a reminder of just how high the road has taken you. This is a car that purrs at idle and howls at redline, British to its bones, and there's no better proving ground for that character than a pass built entirely of corners.
Descend the far side into Gletsch, the switchbacks unwinding one after another as the valley opens up below, engine still warm from the climb. Few drives ask this much of a car in such a short distance, and few cars answer back with this much enthusiasm.
