Head out of Munich, in southern Germany, in the R8 (coupe for the purest, most focused version of Audi's V10 experience, or the R8 Spyder if you want the engine note without a roof in the way) and you're driving Audi's halo car, mid-engined and about as close to a road-legal race car as the brand builds. Point it southeast on the A8, retracing roughly the same stretch of Bavaria that carries you an hour north to Ingolstadt, the town where Audi's four rings first came together. From here, though, the road runs the other direction, toward the mountains.
As the motorway gives way to winding approach roads near the Austrian border, the V10 gets to show a different side of itself. The exhaust note sharpens on downshifts, the quattro all-wheel-drive system putting every one of those 600-odd horses down clean through corners that would unsettle a lesser car. The Alps rise up on both sides as you close in on Salzburg, in Austria, Mozart's birthplace and one of Europe's best-preserved baroque old towns, its skyline of spires and hilltop fortress appearing almost without warning as the road opens into the valley.

Not every Audi story needs mountains. In the Loire Valley, in central France, the A5 Cabriolet gets to do what it does best: roof down, pace unhurried, the road unspooling between vineyards and centuries-old chateaux without a single hairpin in sight. This is Audi at its most approachable, nimble enough to slip into a village square, effortless enough that the drive itself becomes the point.
The turbocharged four-cylinder settles into a quiet, confident hum rather than a growl, content to cruise as the towers of a chateau rise over the tree line ahead. Vineyard rows stripe the hillsides in every direction, and the air carries the faint sweetness of ripening grapes mixed with the green smell of the river close by. The seats stay warm under the open sky, the cabin quiet enough to hold a conversation at speed, the whole car tuned for exactly this kind of unhurried afternoon.
