The town was probably founded between 1085 and 1137, after the Christian conquest of Toledo. In 1565 Philip II granted it independence from Toledo, and on 2 May 1808 its authorities called the country to rebellion against the French, a call that made the name Móstoles famous across Spain. The church of La Asunción dates from the 13th century and keeps a Mudéjar apse, and the Baroque hermitage of the Virgen de los Santos dates from the 17th.

The plain around Móstoles lies at about 660 metres, and roads fan out in every direction.

Philip II declared the place a Royal Site in 1560, and the palace rose through the second half of the 16th century to designs begun by Juan Bautista de Toledo and finished by Juan de Herrera. Beyond it lie the Isle Garden and the Prince's Garden along the river, and UNESCO inscribed the whole landscape in 2001. The air smells of cut grass and river water, and fields of strawberries and asparagus line the way. Joaquín Rodrigo wrote his guitar concerto here in 1939, inspired by those gardens.
