The Parlement de Bretagne dates from the 17th century and was rebuilt after a fire in 1994, and the Thabor Park, laid out between 1860 and 1867, covers ten hectares.

Put the roof down for the road to the sea. Saint-Malo was the home of the corsairs, and its walled town was almost completely destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt between 1948 and 1960. The writer Chateaubriand lies in a tomb on the Île du Grand Bé. Cancale, to the east, is the oyster capital of Brittany, with beds covering about 7.3 square kilometres and a harvest of roughly 25,000 tons a year. Louis XIV had oysters sent to Versailles. A coastal path leads to the Pointe du Grouin, where the view runs across the bay. Sea spray and the smell of wet seaweed fill the open cabin.
A comfortable grand tourer suits the run to Fougères, about 40 kilometres from Rennes. The castle has thirteen towers over some two hectares, and is sometimes called the largest medieval fortress in Europe. The first stone fortifications date from the 11th century and the Hallay and Hague towers from the 12th. Victor Hugo stayed in the town with Juliette Drouet in June 1836. The shoe trade made Fougères prosperous in the 19th century. The cabin stays quiet and the ride stays smooth and soft.
Sports cars suit the winding forest lanes. The poet Wace mentioned Brocéliande around 1160, describing the Barenton fountain, where hunters wet a stone to make it rain. Later writers placed Merlin and Viviane in the forest, together with the Val sans Retour, where Morgan le Fay held unfaithful knights. Today the forest is most often identified with Paimpont. Light flickers through the trees, the engine note rises and falls between the oaks, and a small thrill runs down your spine at each corner.
