This is the coldest and windiest point in Alsace, and winter snow often exceeds 1.5 metres. The bends unwind quickly, your knuckles whiten on the wheel and the engine note fills the clear air.
Cross the Rhine in comfort and head for Baden-Baden. The Schwarzwaldhochstraße runs for more than 60 kilometres from Baden-Baden to Freudenstadt, and the name was first used in 1930 although the full route was not finished until 1952. The road rises quickly to the ridge and then holds between about 800 and 1,000 metres, passing below the Hornisgrinde, the highest mountain of the northern Black Forest at 1,164 metres. The Mummelsee, a circular lake carved by ice, lies nearby. Fir resin scents the cabin, the leather is cool to the touch, and the road unfurls without a bump.
