The road rises up the escarpment in a run of bends toward Lichtenstein Castle, a Gothic Revival fortress of the 1840s inspired by Wilhelm Hauff's novel, and on toward Burg Hohenzollern on its hilltop. The heart rate climbs with each hairpin as the drops open beside the road.
The Neckar valley south of Stuttgart suits a grand tourer. Tübingen, whose university was founded in 1477, stands above the river with its punts, its Hölderlin Tower and its steep lanes. Nearby Bebenhausen is a former monastery set in the Schönbuch forest, which later became a royal hunting lodge of Württemberg. The cabin stays hushed under the trees, and the car glides back to the city with the seat gently cradling you.
