Courchevel 1850 was the first resort in France built entirely from scratch, with no old village beneath it, and its planning began during the Second World War. The resort now spans Le Praz, Courchevel 1550, 1650 and 1850 within Les Trois Vallées, the largest linked ski area in the world. It hosted events for the 1992 Winter Olympics and co-hosted the 2023 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships with Méribel.

The climb from La Chambre covers 19 kilometres and gains 1,522 metres at an average of 8.01 per cent, with a steepest section of 13.5 per cent, and the race first climbed it in 1969 and has returned 28 times in all. Hairpin after hairpin stacks above you, your heart rate climbs with the gradient and the cold at the top bites after the warm valley.
Take a convertible over this pass. At about 1,968 metres, the Cormet de Roselend links Beaufort in the Beaufortain valley with Bourg-Saint-Maurice in the Tarentaise. The Lac de Roselend reservoir lies on the western side, and the race added it in 1979 and has used it 16 times in all. The climb from Bourg-Saint-Maurice runs 19.3 kilometres at a steady 6 per cent. With the roof stowed, thin mountain air carries the smell of cut grass and the cowbells reach you before the cattle appear.
Height and comfort define this big day out, which suits a smooth, spacious tourer. The Col de l'Iseran reaches 2,764 metres and is described as the highest paved pass in the Alps. The D902 joins Val-d'Isère in the Tarentaise with Bonneval-sur-Arc in the Maurienne, and the steep southern descent runs past waterfalls into the Vanoise National Park. The road opens to traffic only in the summer months, so confirm the road is open before you set out. The seats warm your back, the cabin muffles the wind and the peaks drift by in silence.
