Deauville first appears in records in 1060 as A Enilla, a small fishing hamlet. The Duc de Morny, half-brother of Napoleon III, turned it into a fashionable resort in the 1860s with a railway link, a racecourse, a casino and the Grand Hotel. The Normandy Barrière and Royal hotels and a new casino arrived around 1911 to 1913, and Coco Chanel opened her first shop here.
Only about 3,500 people live in Deauville, yet the town fills its calendar. The American film festival began in 1975, and Deauville is known for racing, horse breeding and yearling sales. Beyond the town, the Norman coast and countryside open up in every direction.
Drop the roof and follow the coast to Honfleur, which sits on the southern bank of the Seine estuary opposite Le Havre. The first written record of the town dates from 1025. Slate-fronted houses surround the old harbour, and Sainte-Catherine is the largest wooden church in France, with a bell tower standing apart from the nave. Courbet, Boudin, Monet and Jongkind gathered here, and their work helped give birth to Impressionism. The salt breeze comes in off the estuary and the light changes from minute to minute.
Sports cars suit this longer run along the coast. Étretat is best known for its white chalk cliffs, some as high as 90 metres, and for three natural arches. The Needle rises 70 metres from the sea, and the Manneporte, the largest arch, hides out of sight of the town. Monet painted the arches and stacks several times, and Maurice Leblanc lived here and wrote much of his Arsène Lupin series, now remembered at the Clos Lupin museum. On the coast road the engine note bounces back from the hedgerows and your palms grow damp as the cliff edge appears beside the wing mirror.

Legend places the archangel Michael's visit to Aubert of Avranches in 708, and the abbey church, designed in the 11th century by William of Volpiano, crowns the island at 92 metres. A bridge opened in July 2014 replaced the old causeway, and only 23 people lived on the rock in 2023. The seats cradle you on the long approach, the cabin hums quietly, and the silhouette of the abbey grows slowly through the windscreen.
