Alphonse Daloz founded the resort in April 1882 and planted the forest around it, and an English businessman, John Robinson Whitley, bought most of the land in 1902. The first 18-hole golf course opened in 1904, and the beach stretches for more than 12 kilometres behind dunes several hundred metres deep. Sea air and pine resin mix in the open cabin as the sand comes into view.
This coast belongs to a sports car. On the Côte d'Opale, Cap Blanc-Nez climbs to 134 metres, and chalk cliffs like those of Dover face the English coast across the Channel. An obelisk on the top commemorates the Dover Patrol. The Bay of Wissant curves between this cape and Cap Gris-Nez, about ten miles to the south-west. The road tightens along the cliff edge, a gust shoves at the doors and your stomach lifts at each crest. Stop at the monument, take in the view and let the engine tick as it cools.
