The city reveals itself from above before it ever lets you in. Check into the Caledonian Hotel — the Waldorf Astoria's copper-roofed landmark anchoring the West End — and you gain a vantage point that makes the geography legible. From its upper rooms, the castle sits at the end of Princes Street like a full stop at the end of a very long, very serious sentence. Edinburgh does not perform for visitors. It maintains its own internal logic, its own rhythm, its own considerable standards. The pleasure is in meeting them.
