The full John Cooper Works hatch gets its own tuned engine. This is the other way in: the Cooper S with the JCW package layered on top, all the visual and handling upgrades the badge is known for, at a lower price point than stepping up to the full JCW model.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is shared with the standard Cooper S, 201 hp and 300 Nm sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that snaps between gears with none of the hesitation a torque-converter automatic would introduce. 100 km/h arrives in 6.6 seconds. What the JCW package adds is everything around that engine: retuned suspension, sport brakes, and the short wheelbase and quick steering that turn switchbacks into something closer to a go-kart track than a public road.
Red-stitched sport seats, a thick-rimmed steering wheel, and JCW badging throughout mark this out from the regular Cooper S the moment you sit down. This is the car for someone who wants the JCW look and handling without needing the full JCW model's extra power to enjoy it.
