Warm air drifts over the river, the stone glows in the afternoon light and the roads around the town wind gently through the trees.
The Atlantic coast suits a sports car. The medieval walls of Guérande have ten towers and four gates, run 1,434 metres around the town and were inaugurated in 1488. Outside the walls the salt marshes cover roughly 1,700 hectares, hold Ramsar wetland status and yield about 300 tons of fleur de sel a year. A short way south, La Baule has one of the longest beaches in Europe, backed by more than 250 villas by the architect Georges Lafont. Wind from the salt flats blows across the open stretches, the tyres hum and your pulse lifts every time the road straightens.
A grand tourer gives an easy ride on the 91-kilometre trip to Angers. The château, finished between 1230 and 1240 under Louis IX, has 17 towers and stands on a schist promontory above the Maine. Inside hangs the Apocalypse Tapestry, ordered in 1373 and regarded as the largest medieval tapestry in the world. Henry II Plantagenêt ruled his Angevin empire from here, and King René later filled the city with gardens. The leather smells faintly warm and the cabin hushes the motorway miles.
